A Saint Bernard is not for everyone. Owning any breed is a lifelong commitment. Nothing is cuter than an eight week old Saint Bernard puppy, but will you feel the same about a 150 to 200 pound dog? Other considerations are preventative medications, and the cost associated with maintaining your saints health. Your saint will need heart worm preventative, and flea and tick control medications monthly. Even though your saint lives inside, he/she will still need these preventatives. They will also need to be groomed on a regular basis, and yearly booster shots. A Saint Bernard has a relatively short life span of 8 to 10 years. In case you are wondering, they do slobber, drool, and shed. They absolutely MUST be trained! An unruly 200 pound dog, will be no fun for you, nor the dog. After all of that, there are a lot of good things about sharing your life with a Saint. A true trademark of a Saint is the benevolent expression. The qualities of there temperament are intelligence, trustworthiness, kind, steady, loyal, and friendly by nature. They are also understanding, patient, and loving with children. They truly love there families, and will want to spend as much time as they can with there families. My Saints follow me everywhere. They are happiest when they are right next to you, watching TV, or outside working. They are great companions, and good watch dogs. For the most part, they are quiet, and docile. Some are downright lazy. They are my breed of choice, and I can't imagine my life without my loyal companion...the Saint Bernard. |
